During this series, Ellie of Sallie and Sam Style and I will make FIVE different NEW LOOKS each, that we consider Fall essentials or just one that we desire to have in our Fall wardrobe.
So for the first showing, we made Fall tops, and I made Simplicity 9451. That was a really nice and easy make so definitely check out the previous blog post to see it if you have not already.
Since I published the previous video, I became ill, so it has now been two weeks in between posts. With that being said, I would like to share the garment for today.
Today’s garment is one that I have been wanting in my wardrobe in general for a long time, and I just haven’t made it happen, and one that is in the essential category for me. And that is, a pair of overalls.
These overalls are called my Pumpkin Spice Latte Dungarees! The color of the fabric resembles a pumpkin spice beverage that can easily be ordered from a barista, and it’s definitely a fall color. Everything about this overall garment reminds me of Fall. So let’s talk about the pattern.
I had to make a decision on which pattern I wanted to make, because I have several different overall patterns in my stash. Ultimately, I thought this one, which is Simplicity 9590. I felt this pattern gave me the overall basic overall look that I wanted, and I am pleased with the results.
Below the photos you will find a detailed pattern review.

Pattern Review
Pattern Number: Simplicity 9590
Pattern Description: Misses’ Overalls. Relaxed fit, straight leg overalls in ankle and cropped lengths have adjustable shoulder straps attaching to bib with overall buckles. Features bib and back patch pockets, front yoke and pockets, button closures and top stitched details.
Views: This pattern has two views, ankle and cropped length
View I Made: The view that I made is view A, which is ankle length
FABRIC Recommendations: Denim, Twill, Chino, Corduroy, Cotton Types, Linen Types, and Poplin.
Sewing Skill Level: The skill level is noted as easy and it is, but time consuming.
Notions Needed: Thread, one set of 1 ⅝” overall buckles, four ⅝” buttons.
Pattern Sizing: The pattern sizing is from size XS-XL
Size that I Cut: I made a size XL, which gave a finished hip of 48”. My hips are 45” but the extra three inches gave me room.
Pattern Pieces: There are 11 pattern pieces for this patter but three of the pattern pieces are for interfacing only, and then there are portions of fabric pattern pieces where you need to cut out for interfacing. So there’s a lot of cutting out of fabric and interfacing for this but not too much.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope? Yes!
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes
What did you particularly like about the pattern? I like the simplicity and basic look of these overalls. They just look very original
What did you particularly dislike about the pattern? The faux fly and the opening near the pocket.
Did I learn any new Techniques: Yes, this was my first time making a faux fly.
Did I have a first time experience: My first time making a faux fly.
Fabric Used: Corduroy that was very soft and shed a lot.
Fabric Purchased: JoAnn Fabrics
Buttons Used: Overall buckles
Alterations or changes: Yes, instead of having the opening with the buttons at the pocket area, I overlapped the opening and stitched them closed.
Any modification recommendations: No
Would you recommend it to others? Yes, because it has the most original look that I have been able to find.
Availability: This pattern came out in 2022 and this pattern is still available in stores (JoAnn’s and Hobby Lobby) and it is also available on the Simplicity website. You can find it by clicking HERE!
Pairings:. I paired my dungarees with a long sleeve shirt and white sneakers.
