Hello everyone and thank you for stopping by the blog! My name is Talisha and I also go by creativiteebyT, and today I will be sharing one of TWO different Vintage holiday dresses that I made (check the blog posts for the other one)!
For the month of November, Rochelle has been hosting Vintagevember, where you pick something to sew and share that is vintage, up to the 1970’s and this is also my contribution! To hear more about this, click the link here to watch it on my YouTube channel.
This first dress that I made is one that I have partially made before, and I call this dress my Poinsettia Holiday Dress!!!
I made this by using Butterick 6242, a 1960’s pattern and I made view B, which has the straight skirt!
This style of dress is considered a midriff wiggle dress!
I was so excited after I put this dress on and looked in the mirror because I was soooooo super duper pleased with this dress and the final look! The reason why I was so please is because my vision of this dress came out perfectly! Fabric and all!!!
So, I will show you some photos, and then you can check out the detailed pattern review below!!! You can also watch the dedicated YouTube video by clicking here!

Let’s get into the details of this pattern and fabric!!
*Pattern Review
Pattern Number: Butterick 6242, and this is a Retro Butterick 1960’s Dress
Again, this style of dress is considered a midriff wiggle dress.
Pattern Description: Misses’ Dress; Pullover dress has continuous, self-bias binding for neckline and sleeve hems, bateau neckline, three-quarter dolman sleeves, semi-fitted bodice (cut on crosswise grain), bias, gathered cummerbund with stay, skirt variations, and side zipper. A: Flared, skirt cut on crosswise grain, and narrow hem. B: Straight skirt with back vent.
Views: This pattern has two views with the same bodice. View A has a full gathered skirt and view B has a more straight skirt with some gathers at the front and back and a back vent.
View I Made: The view that I made is view B
FABRIC Recommendations: Broadcloth, Crepe, Wool Jersey
Fabric Used: The fabric that I used is is this beautiful Robert Kaufman Metallic Poinsettias on Black Christmas Cotton Fabric! You can find it here!
Fabric Purchased: JoAnn Fabrics! You can find it by clicking here!
Sewing Skill Level: The skill level is noted as average and I do agree
Notions Needed: 14” all purpose zipper and I recommend purchasing single fold bias tape instead of using the pattern pieces to make your own due to time.
Pattern Sizing: The pattern sizing is from size 6-22
Size that I Cut: The size that I cut was a 20, which gives a finished bust measurement of 46 ½ , and it was a perfect size with ease.
Pattern Pieces: The bodice front, bodice back, stay front, stay back, cummerbund front, cummerbund back, skirt front and skirt back.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope? Yes, I feel like I achieved the look.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, for the bodice; no issues but the skirt vent section was confusing and because I have not made a vent in a while, I used a tutorial for this skirt and it worked out perfectly. You can find the tutorial here!
What did you particularly like about the pattern? I like the design of the dress in general, the ruching at the cumberbund, the dolman sleeves and the bateau neckline!
What did you particularly dislike about the pattern? No dislikes
Did I learn any new Techniques: No
Did I have a first time experience: No
Buttons Used: NoAlterations or changes: Yes, bias tape for the neckline, I used hem tape for the hem, and I also cut my whole entire dress on the crossgrain minus the cummerbund.
Any modification recommendations: No
Would you recommend it to others? Yes! I think this is such a great pattern!
Availability: This pattern came out in 2015 but it is still going strong and available on the Simplicity website and in JoAnn Fabrics and Hobby Lobby!
Pairings:. I paired my dress with my gold accessories, my block heels, my fascinator and gloves.
You can find the fascinator and glove set here!
